January 9—Day 5
9:30 a.m. Just finished a big glass of fresh green juice (well, reddish-green with the beet). I feel fantastic today. It’s all so mental now. Even at night, when physically I’m okay but mentally I’m weary of the fast, it’s just a mental battle over being ready to eat with my family. But again, I stress, it’s not hunger like being two hours late for lunch would feel. Anyway, it’s hard to describe. You have to experience it, but, unless you’re going through a healing crisis, it’s not at all bad physically at this point.
I forgot to take a photo of the juicing process—I’ll do that next time—but here’s a shot of the mess it leaves:
If you work or have a day of errands and you’re fresh juicing, it’s best to make your daily servings at one time and store the extra in a tightly sealed thermos in the frig. It keeps for the day if stored airtight in a dark, cool place.
6:50 p.m. This is the last entry for today. This day seemed to go on forever. My energy is fine. I can describe my attitude in three words: OBSESSED WITH FOOD!!! I have decided during a fast I live completely vicariously through my family as far as eating goes. I want to read about food, look at food, prep and cook food, feed people (I draw the line at watching them eat—just want the plate licked clean when it comes back!) and even clean the kitchen!
And I’ve also decided that I want to eat when I’m stressed, making it even more important to have a peaceful environment during a fast.
For those of you who are still not convinced that fasting could ever be safe for ANYONE, let me assure you, even though they may be in the minority amongst their modern-day peers, there are plenty of MD’s who enthusiastically believe in fasting. Here’s one for you:
Dr. Joel Fuhrman From Facebook |
Joel Fuhrman, M.D. is a board-certified family physician, and nutritional researcher, who specializes in preventing and reversing disease through nutritional and natural methods. He is the author of seven books including the New York Times bestseller Eat to Live: The Amazing Nutrient-Rich Program for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss and his newest release Super Immunity: The Essential Nutrition Guide for Boosting your Body's Defenses to Live Longer, Stronger and Disease Free. As one of the country's leading experts in nutritional and natural healing, Dr. Fuhrman's articles, case studies, and advice are widely published, from medical journals such as the University of Pennsylvania Journal of Orthopedics and Nutrition Journal, to consumer publications such as Mothering Magazine and Health Science. He has appeared on hundreds of radio and television shows including: ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CNN, Today, Good Morning America, the Discovery Channel, TV Food Network, and the Dr. Oz Show. His own television program, 3 Steps to Incredible Health!, directly addresses the crisis of obesity and chronic disease plaguing America and helps support PBS stations nationwide.
Dr. Fuhrman is actively involved in scientific research on human nutrition, and has published in several peer-reviewed scientific journals. His discoveries regarding food addiction and human hunger were published in Nutrition Journal in November 2010, in a paper entitled 'Changing perceptions of hunger on a high nutrient density diet.' Currently his research activities include working with researchers on the National Institutes of Health on nutritional interventions for specific autoimmune diseases.
Here is what some of his colleagues said about Fuhrman’s book:
"Dr. Fuhrman's powerful and practical guidelines apply for conditions ranging from the common cold to serious heart problems. This program provides an alternative to the costly and all-to-common side effects of sugery and drugs."--Andrew Nicholson, M.D., Director of Preventive Medicine, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine
"By individually tailoring nutrition plans based on a case-by-case basis, Fuhrman has treated hundreds of patients with rheumatoid arthritis successfully."--Vegetarian Times
"This is where the future of medicine should be heading."--Ronald Cridland, M.D.
“This is neither alternative medicine nor conservative medicine, but rather progressive medicine. Dr. Fuhrman's approach offers individuals suffering from [chronic] diseases the only real chance for a meaningful cure. I have been fortunate to observe many of these outcomes firsthand and can testify to the power of this approach for certain diseases."--James Craner, M.D., M.P.H.
“Dr. Fuhrman's book is revolutionary. It shows clearly and unmistakably the way to recover health, and could change the prevailing way of treating disease."--Theodore Coumentakis, M.D.
“If you are lucky, you will read Dr. Furhman's book before you have subjected yourself to medications and medical procedures. This book is for those who want to take charge over their health and well-being, and for those who want to embark on a journey toward a more satisfying life."--Don Jeret, M.D.
“I know that every health seeker in America will want to read this book. It provides a working knowledge of vital information that is currently known to relatively few people. Share it with those you love."--John Pilla, M.D.
Fasting is NOT starving. Big, HUGE difference!! Only those with an eating disorder could ever be excused for not recognizing the difference--meaning, fasting is a very temporary therapy, done by someone for a relatively short period of time and who endures it, waiting with something between patience and desperation for it to be OVER!!
As I mentioned in my first post, there is a short list of folks who should never fast, a slightly longer list of those who should only fast under a health professional's supervision and the remaining masses who not only could but should very seriously educate themselves on the subject.
Hump day over! Looking forward to the downhill slide!
